It’s officially 2025 and while most people are charging into the year with big goals and resolutions, I’m doing the opposite. For a long time, I was a resolution-maker, too. But my energy always seemed to fade by spring, and before I knew it, I was right back in the very habits I’d tried to leave behind.
Then, a few years ago, I came across a book called Wintering by Katherine May. I didn’t know I needed it, but I devoured it. It felt like an answer to a question I didn’t even know I was asking.
In it, Katherine speaks to the quiet power of rest and reflection. It hit me deeply so much so that I stopped treating January as a starting line. Now, I use winter to pause, nourish, and reflect. I don’t “begin” my year until spring.
Even this month, with the release of my new thriller When She’s Gone on January 14, I’ve chosen not to pack my schedule with in-person events. I’m honoring my wintering season instead.
Because here’s the truth:
In a world that glorifies doing, choosing to rest can feel… radical.
But rest isn’t laziness.
It’s wisdom. It’s rhythm. It’s human.
We were never meant to be in constant motion. We are not machines. And because we are not machines, rest is not a luxury—it’s essential.
On the Podcast: Wintering, Explained
In today’s episode of The Unreachable Podcast, Alex and I explore the idea of wintering, what it means, why it matters, and how to embrace this season for what it is: a sacred window to return to yourself.
How to Begin Wintering Today
Set Unreachable Windows: Choose specific times in your day, mornings, meals, evenings, to be tech-free and present. Use that time to reconnect with your body, breath, or surroundings.
Create Sacred Space - Carve out a cozy, device-free corner in your home for journaling, reading, or simply being. Make it yours. Make it still.
Embrace the Pause - Walk slowly. Eat slowly. Say no more often. Let yourself be quiet without needing to explain. This, too, is movement.
